If Sri Lanka is your first right-hand-drive, drive-on-the-left country, the airport road is a far gentler place to find your feet than central Colombo. Traffic on the E03 is light, lanes are wide, and there is nobody behind you on Galle Road at rush hour while you get used to the gear selector sitting on your left.
None of this rules out heading straight into Colombo on the day you land. Plenty of visitors do exactly that, especially when a hotel booking or a meeting the next morning makes the extra 35 km worthwhile. The point is simply that the airport gives you a genuine option most cities do not: a short, easy first drive followed by an early night, instead of an hour of city traffic straight off a long flight.

How the handover at Katunayake actually works
There is no rental counter inside the terminal. The process is simpler than that, and it runs on three things you sort out before you land rather than at the desk.
Meeting your driver
