Booking a long stay, in order

Ask

Tell the supplier the real length of the stay and the rough dates before you look at a single price. Weekly and monthly rates are usually a different quote path than the daily search above, and asking early is how you find out whether a car is even available for the whole window.

Agree the terms

Get the mileage allowance, the servicing plan and how the temporary driving permit is handled for the full stay in writing before you pay anything. A message thread is enough. A verbal understanding at handover is not.

Collect

Handover works the same way as any other rental here: at the airport, a hotel, or an address you give the supplier. Bring the International Driving Permit and your home licence, since the local permit is normally arranged against those two documents.

Check in monthly

On a stay that runs past the first month, agree upfront how renewal works: a short message, a fresh look at the car, or nothing at all if the original agreement already covers the whole period. Ask this once at the start rather than at the first renewal date.

Who actually books a car for a season in Colombo

The long stay crowd here is not the same as a Mediterranean resort's. The permit question, stretched over a season

A temporary local driving permit is normally arranged for the length of the rental, the same as it would be for a one week booking, working from an International Driving Permit plus your home licence. Most long stay suppliers here have a clear, practiced answer to this, since it comes up often enough in a market with as many remote workers and returning visitors as Colombo sees.

Servicing works the same way, in its own words: the car remains the supplier's for as long as you have it booked, and a scheduled service at some point in a multi month stay is normal and expected, not a sign something is wrong.
